Salt and Light

In the Ancient Near East, salt was incredibly valuable. In fact, it was sometimes used as a means of currency. It was useful both for preserving food and also for adding flavor. So when Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth, he is saying that they have great value and that they add great benefit to the world.
